Rwanda | Nyagatare: Cyabayaga lake protection minimises accidents

Guarding the created lake came to life after two people on different occasions drowned in this lake.

Rwanda | Residents near Cyabayaga manmade lake have revealed that accidents stopped after two security guards were deployed at that lake.

Residents near Cyabayaga manmade lake have revealed that accidents stopped after two security guards were deployed at that lake.

When a child below 5years drowned in January 2011, residents near the lake decided to keep their children at home to avoid more deaths.

Purukeriya Mukandamage, a resident laments: “Instead of a child losing life, he or she is better off locked in the house.”

When parents made decisions, Deogratias Rukaya Cyabayaga cell leader said there are plans to shift all residents from that place because it’s the best solution to children drowning in the lake.

Although these measures did not come to effect, deploying security guards at the lake yielded because nobody has lost life in the lake since then.

J.Claude Mugiraneza, a member of the fishing cooperative that works near the lake says, four security officials work in shifts to stop drunken people and children from getting close to the manmade lake.
