Rwanda | Nyagatare District residents cry for health centers

Residents of Rutungo in Rwimiyaga sector in Nyagatare district face serious problem as they lack health center, saying sick people make a 48 Kilometers journey to a nearby health center which is in Matimba sector.

They complain that when a pregnant woman goes to labour still in the village, the only alternative is to make her give birth at home, a decision that is dangerous and most of the time becoming fatal.

Without money, it only gets harder to go to this health center as the only transport available is motorcycle which costs about Rwf5000. Apart from medical services, these people in this sector have no schools or telephone networks and services.

Residents say that the reason they don’t have infrastructure services is because they do not live in village settlement but Célestin Munyangabo the executive secretary of Rwimiyaga sector said that it is because people started residing in this area soon.

However, Munyangabo said that they are establishing infrastructure services to them including primary school that was completed in June 2012 and a health post which will be built in this year as its funds are allocated in the district’s budget.

Among the infrastructure that people need include water, electricity, health center, schools, roads and telephone services.
