The Governor of the North, Aime Bosenibamwe, says the Northern Province aims to increase health insurance subscription for residents. Bosenibamwe says the above will be achieved through sensitization campaigns among local people.
Meanwhile, a report pins the Northern residents for being slow on paying their year’s fee for medical insurance {mutuelle de santé}.
Available statistics indicate that on average less than 10 per cent of the total population in the province has cleared the health insurance bill.
According to the report, Musanze district has cleared health insurance by only 6 per cent while Gicumbi district is at 13 per cent.
The Governor blames poverty for partly influencing the snail pace payment for healthy insurance, he however highlights more measures that will improve health insurance clearance.
“We intend to encourage increased subscription to health insurance by using SACCOS where poor people will pay annual charges of 2,000,the rest of the money will be paid by the government,” Aime Bosenibamwe said.
Well-to-do and middle class Rwandans will pay 3000 Rwf and 7000 Rwf, depending on the category.
The Rwandan government annually injects over 4 million USD in the health insurance programme.
The Global Fund chips in with about 5million USD, while the population contributes about 30 million USD.
