Rwanda : Mazane Island residents get services on HIV/AIDS for the first time

There was a sensitization about AIDS prevention and voluntary HIV/AIDS testing at Mazane Island in Rweru sector in Bugesera district on the 6th.Sept.2012. This program was prepared by Bugesera Youth Center in the partnership with National Youth Council in the district.

The coordinator of Bugesera Youth Center Jean Bosco Muhirwa said that this sensitization was meant to make Mazane residents fell that they are part of others in the district and not to be lonely especially the youth and to participate in development of the country well knowing of their health statuses.

Valens Bavugirije one of the residents who took the initiative to test for HIV/AIDS voluntarily had this to say, “I have tested and I am HIV negative, I am going to avoid anything that would lead me into having sexual intercourse till the time I will get married.”

Jean Claude Gahigi the coordinator of National Youth Council in Bugesera district asked Mazane youth to form cooperatives as the only way to get projects that will develop them.

Though there is a health center at Mazane Island, it doesn’t have AIDS counseling and AIDS testing services those that need those services travel by water through Lake Rweru to Nzagwa health center that is also in Rweru sector.
