On Wednesday 03/10/2012, the management of Kabgayi hospital complained to the minster of health Agnes Binagwaho about the hospital buildings that are too old, and also the few types of equipment that the hospital has.

The priest of the catholic church of Kabgayi and also an official in the hospital of kabgayi, Musenyeri Maragda said that “this hospital was built in 1937 by the sisters and up to now it’s still in their hands though the government also plays a very big part in running it”.

She said that the hospital was renovated in the 70’s ,but since then they have not been any renovations at the hospital,  calling on the ministry of health to take part in its renovation since the ministry plays a big part in running the hospital.

The director of the hospital Dr.Osee Sebatunzi also said that “this hospital still has old buildings which do not move with the new Rwandan type of building”, adding on that there are poor iron sheets that cover a big part of it, yet the government gave an order that such iron sheets should be done away with since they might cause diseases like cancer to the people that have them”.

He added on that “the hospital also has a problem of poor and few types of equipment which affect the provision of good services to the people of the area”.

He said that “they should be getting expert doctors from overseas who can help them in the different health issues but when they come they cannot even get machines since they are not there”.

The director also said that “the hospital does not have a washing machine to help wash the hospital cloths and hence they cannot have good hygiene there”.

He again noted that “though this hospital is known as the best in eye treatment in the country, it has only one doctor in that field, who is an expatriate still”, adding on that” if this one optician got a problem they would not get someone else to help at the hospital, yet still being one doctor is a very big task for him”.

The hospital also show problems faced in the health centers which do not have equipments so that they can start working. They gave an example of one health center of Rugendabari which does not have beds and mattresses for the patients

Speaking to the people the minister noted that about 40 beds to this hospital were available and advised them to try and get them as soon as possible.

Responding to the other problems that were aired out, the minister solved most of them and also said that “the remaining ones would be taken care of quickly depending on the government’s programmes and budget”.

On the issue of specialists from overseas, the minister said that” this has not yet reached the possibility of the government but they were available in the Kigali hospital and in the National university of Butare hospital, and would soon be available in Kabgayi, since its going to be the hospital of the province.

On the poor infrastructure, the minister said that” this problem will be solved since they had started constructing buildings like the Emergency Room, and the Mortuary at the hospital.
