While family planning is meant for the married, youth of Gatsibo sector in Gatsibo district have started embracing family planning to protect them from getting unwanted pregnancies.
Youth revealed that sexual intercourse is no longer an issue to hide because its common but they try to prevent its consequences.
Noella Kayitesi narrates: “Fornication is very common here! Many of us have become pregnant and dropped out of school, that’s why we have embarked on using family planning.”
Talking to the youth, they confirmed they no longer fear to buy condoms at the shops or travel with them in their pockets due to sensitization.
Francoise Uwera, doctor at Nyabisindu health centre in Gatsibo district confirmed to the reporter that youth seek family planning services.
However, we advice them mostly on using condoms and prevent contracting HIV/AIDS instead of thinking about unwanted pregnancies, she says.
Uwera explains “Some youth request for long term methods of family planning but we tell them how condoms are the best way of preventing pregnancies and AIDS.”
In general, youth have understood the importance of using family planning methods though some of them have not yet applied them.
According to the recent report from the ministry of health, Gatsibo is among the districts that value family planning services.
