Family planning is one of the many strategies that can lead people to achieve their goals in life and improve their families’ social being and at the same time develop the country. Family planning is also good for it helps reduce the Mother/infant mortality rate.
This was said by Emmanuel Kayumba the health official in Gicumbi district in the program to encourage family planning to local people and making known the advantages of family planning to the family promotion as well as the country’s development.
“Many people are still ignorant of the need to participate in family planning and give birth to as many children as possible in the hope of having children with both sexes” says Kayumba. “The other issue is lack of understanding between couples for one of them to use family planning depending on beliefs or need of a larger family.”
The negative effects of having many children beyond one’s economic stand include lack of enough food provisions, no education due lack of school fees, no medical insurance and no family development.
“Giving birth to many children doesn’t help at all but instead it is hectic and keeps one in an endless cycle of poverty” says Patricien Nyiramahane a mother of 12 children in Gicumbi district.
The district has many strategies to make as many people aware of family planning through the program of encouraging local people to learn and use family planning. Some of these strategies include sensitizing people about family planning by the local health advisors and in health centers.
“All people who will be going to health centers to seek any kind of service will get sensitized about family planning” says Emmanuel Kayumba. “According to the health advisors reports, most people now understand the need for family planning but we need to keep it up until all people understand and use this program.”
The local health advisors in Gicumbi district have access to all methods of family planning including contraceptive pills, beads, condoms among others of which they are trained on how they work.
The district is preparing a campaign for Family Planning week to make all people know the dangers and importance of family planning through presentations, dialogues and teachings. 5% people in Gicumbi district are participating in this program but it intends to increase this number up to 100 percent.
