Gisenyi district hospital has for the last two years come up with a new mechanism of giving expectant mothers special medical treatment and attention, a service that is aimed at eliminating maternal deaths among women.
Through giving pregnant women special customer care, the hospital director, Major Dr. William Kanyankole says that the facility will ensure that no more women will die because of a failed service and negligence on a pregnant woman.
Kanyankole says that though this service creates envy among other patients, there is no need for expect women to be delayed in getting any medical services because of their situation.
“This service is totally aimed at giving pregnant women all the services they need. Patients have now known the system and any pregnant woman is giving first priority- in which case we have set up a special wing that takes care of women only” Kanyankole said on June 18, 2014 during a health media tour.
With this service in place, the hospital has managed to contain maternal deaths to almost 100 percent and at the same time improve infant and maternal health services in the area.
One of the expectant mothers we found at the hospital, Valerie Mukakarangwa, says that this opportunity gives women an opportunity to get good services and motivate women to seek medical care.
“We are assured of a good service and this should be in every hospital so as to encourage women to seek antenatal care” Mukakarangwa says.
Gisenyi hospital is referral hospital located in Rubavu district western province of Rwanda. The hospital offers services to over 30.000 and other from neighboring districts of Nyabihu, Rutsiro and neighboring countries of DR Congo and Burundi.
