The youth in Nyabihu district have been encouraged to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS especially new AIDS infections by avoiding premarital sex.
The coordinator for the commission for the fight AIDS in the district Sostene Nzitonda says that protecting people especially the youth from new AIDS infections is the only way to fight the pandemic.
HE explains that youth aged between 15 and 25 are the ones with a high risk of being infected in the district.
The district’s recent findings show that the female youth in that age group are mostly infected by AIDS compared to men.
Nyabihu district is working hard to reduce the new HIV/AIDS infections in the people and among the strategies set include encouraging sex workers to learn technical skills and sensitizing the youth in sectors and schools.
With the support of HIV/AIDS related projects, these strategies are being worked on. People in Nyabihu district are all being urged to embrace abstinence, faithfulness to the married couples and condom use in case of failure to abstain.
According to the recent statistics, more than 2000 Nyabihu residents are infected of which females take the larger percentage. Based on the findings in Rwanda in 2010, 3 percent of the national population is infected by HIV/AIDS.
